Poppies do not like any root disturbances,. Also very tiny seeds! To make sowing easier, sprinkle seeds on a sheet of paper and dampen your finger to pick up a few at a time. Or mix one part seed with 5 parts sand and scatter over the prepared growing area.

COLD STRATIFICATION NEEDED - will happen naturally if seeds are sown in the fall. You can fake the winter by refrigerating for at least 2 ½ months:
- About 3 months before spring, place seeds in a plastic bag with a handful of slightly dampened, clean peat, paper towel, or a mix of clean peat and sand.
- Seal and label the bag with the name and date, then store in the refrigerator (not freezer)
- After 2 1/2 months your seeds will be ready for planting in the spring

Direct Broadcast: Sprinkle the seeds on top of the soil. Do not cover them. Oriental poppies need light to germinate. Water the area regularly, keeping it moist (but not water logged) until the seeds germinate, usually around 14 days. When the seedlings are about 1" tall, thin to 6" apart. You can sow in fall for spring flowers for a natural cold stratification.

Indoor Sow: Poppies won't live through root disturbances so start in biodegradable planting pots, water pots first then sprinkle just a few seeds in each pot (surface). Once seeded, cover the pots with plastic to help keep moisture locked and place in a sunny window. They should germinate in 7-14 days. When seedlings are approx 1" tall, pinch off to strongest plant careful not to disturb the root system down below.

Poppies should be watered regularly, but they can tolerate dry conditions. It is not necessary to fertilize poppies.

Harvest: If you decide to cut the poppies for a vase or a bouquet, it helps the life to burn the ends of the poppy stems before putting in water.
